Accelerate Curriculum

At PM Wells Charter Academy, we recognize the importance of meeting the unique learning needs of our high-performing students. As part of our middle school master schedule, we offer acceleration opportunities for students who are ready to take on more advanced coursework.

MATH

For 6th grade students who demonstrate exceptional proficiency in math, we offer an advanced math placement option. Students who score a level 4 or 5 on the 5th grade Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) assessment in math are eligible for placement in our advanced math program. In this program, these students will engage in a rigorous curriculum that aligns with the 7th grade math standards. By participating in advanced math, students have the opportunity to explore more complex mathematical concepts and further develop their problem-solving and critical thinking skills. At the end of the academic year, students in the advanced math program will take the 7th grade FAST assessment in math instead of the 6th grade one since they studied the 7th grade curriculum. This assessment evaluates their mastery of the 7th grade math standards and provides valuable feedback on their academic progress.

For 7th grade students who demonstrate exceptional proficiency in math, we offer an advanced math placement option. Students who score a level 4 or 5 on the 6th grade Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) assessment in math are eligible to enroll in the high school course of Algebra 1. This course provides a challenging and rigorous curriculum that goes beyond the middle school level. It allows students to delve deeper into the subject matter and acquire advanced skills and knowledge. It’s important to note that Algebra 1 has End of Course (EOC) state exams. These exams assess students’ understanding and mastery of the subject and serve as an important component of their overall grade. Successful completion of these exams demonstrates proficiency and can earn students high school credit. Please note that the EOC results are included in the calculation of the student’s final grade with a 30% value. The final grade is calculated into the student’s high school grade point average (GPA).

For 8th grade students who took Algebra 1 in 7th grade and successfully passed the course and End of Course exam, they have the opportunity to take Geometry in 8th grade. Geometry is a high school level course that builds upon the concepts learned in Algebra 1. It also has an End of Course Exam that assesses students’ understanding and mastery of the subject. On the other hand, 8th grade students who took Algebra 1 in 7th grade but did not pass the course nor passed the End of Course exam will need to retake Algebra 1 to solidify their understanding and improve their skills. For 8th grade students who scored a Level 3, 4, or 5 on the 7th grade FAST and did not take Algebra 1 in 7th grade, they will be placed in Algebra 1 in 8th grade.

The advanced math and high school-level courses provide an accelerated academic pathway for our high-performing students. We believe in challenging students to reach their full potential and prepare them for future success in their educational journey.

SCIENCE

For 8th grade students who scored a level 3, 4, or 5 on the FAST assessment in 7th grade in English Language Arts (ELA), we offer the opportunity to be placed in the high school course of Biology. Biology is a rigorous course that explores various topics in the field of life sciences. It also has an End of Course Exam that assesses students’ understanding and mastery of the subject.

By providing acceleration options, we aim to support the academic growth and potential of our high-performing students. Through these advanced courses, students are challenged to reach their full potential, develop critical thinking skills, and prepare themselves for the academic rigor of high school.

SPANISH

For 8th grade students who achieved an “A” or a “B” in their 6th grade and/or 7th grade Spanish course, he/she will be placed in the high school course of  Spanish 1 instead of middle school Spanish.
