Job Summary:

The 2nd grade teacher is responsible for creating a supportive, engaging, and safe learning environment for students in the second grade. This role involves planning and implementing curriculum aligned with state standards, assessing student progress, and collaborating with colleagues and parents to support students’ academic and social-emotional growth.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Curriculum Planning and Instruction: Develop and deliver lesson plans that meet the educational requirements of each student in accordance with state curriculum standards. Utilize a variety of teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles and ensure comprehensive understanding.
  • Classroom Management: Create and maintain a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students. Implement classroom rules and discipline measures in a consistent and fair manner.
  • Assessment and Evaluation: Conduct regular assessments of student performance through various methods such as quizzes, tests, projects, and class participation. Provide feedback and grades in a timely manner.
  • Parent Communication: Maintain open lines of communication with parents regarding their children’s academic and social progress. Conduct parent-teacher conferences and participate in school meetings as required.
  • Professional Development: Engage in continuous professional development to stay current with educational trends, teaching strategies, and state standards. Participate in workshops, seminars, and meetings to enhance teaching skills and knowledge.
  • Special Needs Accommodation: Identify students with special needs and collaborate with special education teachers or counselors to adapt teaching methods and materials to meet these students’ needs.
  • Extracurricular Involvement: Supervise and participate in extracurricular activities such as social activities, sporting activities, clubs, and student organizations as required.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education or a related field is required. A Master’s degree in Education is preferred.
  • Certifications: Must possess a valid teaching certification for the state of Florida where they will be teaching.
  • Experience: Previous experience teaching at the elementary level is preferred, though not always required.
  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively convey information to students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Creativity and Flexibility: Ability to develop creative teaching strategies and adapt plans as needed to meet the diverse needs of students.
  • Patience and Empathy: Must have a high level of patience and the ability to remain calm and empathetic when dealing with students.
  • Organizational Skills: Strong organizational and time-management skills to handle multiple tasks and responsibilities.

Additional Requirements:

  • Pass a background check, often including fingerprints.
  • Complete any required local or state training for teachers (such as first aid, child abuse recognition, etc.).
  • Physical ability to perform teaching duties and supervise children, which may include sitting on the floor, bending, walking, and lifting.

Working Conditions:

The 2nd-grade teacher will work with the NAEP family network of schools at PM Wells Charter Academy. The job involves standing for extended periods, interacting with children at their level, and occasional outdoor supervision duties. Teachers usually work a standard school year with a long summer break, though some may teach summer school or engage in professional development during the break.
